Bob used to be the King of the Swingers when young. He was never much of a ball-player, so when he was an old dude what he missed most was hanging with his birches. It's interesting that he avoids the word "frost" when describing the ice that bends the trees.

Actually the poem doesn't need much analysis because the meaning is plain enough.
