Heres where our dreading experience all got started. Introduction to the salon and the beginning of the dread maintenance. Part 1 of this dreading in Bangkok series.
Dread locs being maintained and started at 2 salons at Kao San road in Bangkok Thailand. There are 5 different employees doing the crochet hook method. Showing how different people who do dreads all day do it. They are very quick and effective. They roll the loc in their left hand and poke the .65 mm crochet hook straight into and through the loc, then quickly slide it out going in the same direction as the curve of the hook. They repeat thousands of times. This video is shot over the period of 4 hours to show how long it takes to do dreads and maintain them, even by skilled workers. This method is a necessity if you do locs professionally!
As I watch these videos I notice that their hand moves in two motions. One to pierce the loc, one to glide/curve the hook out.

  • would it work for bi racial people because im half black/white and my is straight but nappy

  • the more kinky the hair the easier it is to form and maintain the dread loc. Your nappy hair sounds like it would form locs really well. I have a great many dread info and tutorial videos if you want more info.

  • this teqnique s porbobly only for str8 hair... tis isnot recommended for black hair as you would probobly end up bald

  • Actually this method works better on naturally kinky hair. Locs are the formation of knots and the crochet hook manages the loc's shape. It's just that hair that is naturally kinky can form dread knots easier. People with strait hair need help to control the knots more.

  • 5 Stars! But I still don't get what they're doing. Are they actually crocheting the synthetic hair into her hair or are they just pushing it in, in which case how does it stay. Also are they using synthetic hair on your wife's head or is it real hair? Also, is there a grade of hair they use? Regardless I enjoyed watching this. Thanks.

  • They can use real or synthetic hair to add and make the dreads thicker. Real hair is the best because fake hair feels unnatural and weighs more. It's worth the extra money to add the real hair. But if the dreads locs are done well they do not need to add any hair.
