Buses in London are carrying Islamic messages of peace and respect, as part of a national campaign launched today to reassert the peaceful principles of the faith.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim community has launched the campaign in an attempt to counter the extremists who have used Islam for political reasons.

Some 100 buses in the capital city will carry the message "Muslims for loyalty, freedom and peace".

Ahmadi Muslims will also be taking part in a national doorstep campaign, handing out leaflets that explain the true principles of Islam.

The leaflets emphasise the community's motto of "Love for all, hatred for none" and explain the key beliefs behind the religion. These include equal rights for all and protecting the sanctity of life.

The leaflets read: "Islam emphasises the sanctity of life and unequivocally rejects violence and terrorism in any form (including suicide bombings) and for any reason."

The doorstep campaign is expected to last for up to six months, with inner city areas to be targeted first. The community is aiming to reach 10% of the population with its message, calling on nearly three million households in the initial phase of the campaign.

Shahid Malik, MP for Dewsbury and Mirfield said the campaign was "promoting an understanding and exploration of Islam within wider British society."

The campaign comes at a time when Islamophobia is seen to be on the contineous increase.

The British Social Attitudes survey, the results of which were released earlier this month, found that only a quarter of the population felt positive about Islam, while 55% would be opposed to a large mosque being built in their area.

Mr. Rafiq Hayat, the national president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK said: "The true peaceful Islam is poles apart from the hatred that is preached by a minority. Such extremists do not represent Islam yet, through the media, their words and deeds have a damaging impact on Muslims and non-Muslims every day.

"By emphasising the values highlighted in this campaign we hope to facilitate a better understanding of Islam so that people are able judge for themselves the actions of those who claim to speak and act in its good name. Islam stresses the promotion of peace in words and deeds."

  • So, you are praying for those who have lost their lives in this "religious" conflict in Egypt..? Because it is so obvious that those involved are "muslim" and "christian" 'believers'......

  • @jdemeulenaer123 I am praying for everyone regardless of their religious affiliations who are suffering unnecessarily around the world because of people who have their own political and vested interests. Those who want rifts among communities will do anything to to flare up such misunderstandings because it helps their cause.

  • Buddhism does not make anything compulsory because it is you who do your move toward the Buddha teachings, Buddha does not teach you to bow before a statue or bow toward a temple. It just teaches you to be good to others and be open to others and kind to others. This is difficult enough for anyone. The way to do it, is yours as you are a responsible adult and when you approach the Buddha teachings, this move is between you and the universal spirit. Buddhism proposes several guidelines, not one

  • @jdemeulenaer123 My understanding of Buddha's teachings is that he not only believed in one God, hereafter, communion with the Living God but also claimed to have been sent by God Almighty (as a prophet). He showed the path that leads to God, just like all other prophets of God. He certainly taught his people to be good just like all other true prophets did. Reality of Buddha's (pbuh) teachings: alislam . o r g/library/books/revelation/part_2_section_2 . h t m l (without spaces)

  • Peace everywhere? That is not exactly what we see in Egypt right now....unfortunately, so called "religious wars", (totally contradictory term, but we have to call it by a name...) still rage...

  • @jdemeulenaer123 Wars in the world are not because religions teach us so (as you rightly suggested too). These are political wars instigated by those who have their own agendas. Nothing to do with religion. Worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has always promoted understanding and peace among followers of different religions and backgrounds. We can only do as much as is possible. We promote peace through our actions and prayers. World will change insha Allah (God willing) for the better.

  • @kagiso3741 We don't need to go back 1400 years to see which "spirit" started Islam. Lets see what true Islam can do in this age of injustice, selfishness, intolerance and hate: /watch?v=lWVqtk_pkLI

This alone should be a proof enough to find that Islam is nothing but a Divine religion for the good of humanity.

  • @Abdul4691 Islam came to rule the hearts of people and not just mere lands. Swords can sever heads but it can't change the hearts. It is the heart that the beautiful teachings of Islam changes. Islam will continue to spread and rule the hearts with love, understanding, tolerance, peace and harmony insha Allah.

  • @Abdul4691 Islam is not there to "rule" but to do nothing at all

  • , as there are so many different beings in this world, that you have to apply different approaches to the so varied human beings. The recognize on great spirit and the same goes for the christians, the ortodox church, the jews, the indus, shintoists, etc, you cannot say that ONLY Islam possess the absolute truth. That is absolute nonsense...
