Stairs are the easiest thing to clean. Simply treat like any other part of the carpet and use a stair tool or upholstery tool.

carpetking said 2 dollars per stain? what kind of stain? Hopefully not pet urine stains! Good agents for odor removal and yellowing caused by pet urine are expensive. More like 15 to 20per urine removal would be more like it.
