I booted my computer today and the sound quit working. I went to System Preferences Sound and under the Hardware tab there was nothing there. I thought I was going to lose it. Here is the fix that worked for me.

Step 1: Open Terminal. This can be done by going to Applications Accessories Terminal
or it can be done alternately by hitting CTRL+ALT+T

Step 2: Type this command then hit Enter

sudo aptitude --purge reinstall linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils linux-image-`uname -r` linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r` libasound2

Type in your password when prompted then hit enter.

Step 3: Reboot your computer. That's it. Thank You For Watching.

  • what did you use to record?

  • @minecraftModNmore I use gtk-recordMyDesktop for all my videos. Lately (after gnome 3 came out) I have been unchecking the "Outline Capture Area On Screen" box in the Advanced -> Misc section.

  • @bostonhacker Your right. I guess I thought it was back then. Good catch.

  • @dodo3773 it is not installed by default

  • @RetroShinigami I agree. It is nice to know more about what my operating system is doing behind the scenes. Although, sometimes it can seem more complex. Still trying to figure out how to understand some of these different log files.

  • @LukeoXx I am pretty sure that aptitude is installed in Ubuntu 10.04 by default. What distro are you using? What happens if you just type "aptitude" in the terminal.

  • @dodo3773 There were not any colons in the code I pasted, I've tried the code in the description multiple times, its not working...

  • @LukeoXx There should not be any colons. It should be "sudo aptitude" not "sudo: aptitude:" Just copy and paste the command from the description and it should work.

  • Terminal told me, "sudo: aptitude: command not found"
