I had this readily available on my computer and thought I'd share it.

The famous English translation of Mendelssohn's 'Hör mein bitten...O könnt ich fliegen', which sounds just as good as its German counterpart.

Sung by the choir of the Leeds Parish Church of St. Peter, recorded in 1970, conducted by Donald Hunt with Anthony Langford on organ.

The soloist treble (boy soprano) is Paul Dutton who was 13 years old at the time. His son William (see link below) is now also a very fine singer (I'm not sure if he still sings in the treble range).

Click on this link to hear his son William singing:

Note that the 'straight' tone (minimal vibrato) is characteristic of English choristers - they do it on purpose. You have to get used to it (especially when like me you listen to mostly operatic singers), but it does sound nice.

This recording was posted for informative purposes only and is not intended to infringe copyright, if this is in violation please notify me and I will take this down.

Please be patient...going to post some more opera when I have the time. I'll get those Swedish songs from the Bjorling 1958 concert up when I can.

  • Thank you for this post.

Do you happen to have anything sung by Bjorling as a child? I heard him once in a recording with his family, and would love to hear him again.

  • Yes but all on LP. The Bjorling trio recorded quite extensively, much more than one would expect. There's actually a recording of them singing a popular Swedish song as adults, a number they used to do as an encore when they were children. Very endearing!

  • Beautiful:) this boy had an amazing voice. But I still like the German version a little bit better ;)

  • Psalm 55

  • I never listento classical music, but this is brilliant.

  • Wonderful, thank you so much !!

  • I was on this recording along with Jonathan Sage, Andrew Petty, Graham Parkin, and many many others.

The Dentons were indeed fine singers and I have many cherished memories of these times. Ian Beattie.

  • Superb! I can hear through the rather poor recording quality that this is a very fine performance. The unobtrusive organ playing is also much appreciated.

CHEEBUK has just subscribed and I am pleased to have found this among his favorites. I also happen to live not more than 6 miles from Leeds Parish Church (where I also happen to have failed the audition in about 1951).

    Thanks for the upload.

  • This is awesome! This was recorded only three years after I left Leeds Parish Church choir as a Counter-Tenor, having previously been Head Chorister there in 1964/65. I left October 1967 to come to Canada. My brother Robert Denton (also a soloist in Leeds Parish Church) would have been in the choir at this time, as would my father John Denton. Wonderful to have this available on YouTube. Thanks for sharing this, and I'm sure no copyright is violated. I'm just thrilled it's on here. Thanks!

  • I sung this as a chorister. Very nice

  • he sing better than his son william. but william is good, too!
