From what I've read, Burr did not actually try to take the presidency when he and Jefferson tied. He allowed it to be given to Jefferson, and was stabbed in the back for his efforts. Jefferson never trusted Burr, and though Burr delivered New York to him and won him the election, he later betrayed him and stopped him from becoming president, favoring Madison instead.
