Artis Wodehouse joins William Workinger, pianist in a performance of Saint-Saens Cavatina for piano and harmonium at the Unitarian Church of Montclair, New Jersey May 12, 2008. She plays on a 7-stop vintage Yamaha reed organ.
Why does the pianist use a modern Steinway and not on old Erard, Pleyel, or something else? Here the combination of the different tone colours is not good.
This piece is very fine, but I don't believe this reedorgan is good to take place of a french harmonium (orgue expressif). Personnally I'm organist and I've a two manual and pedal reedorgan and a Kasriel harmonium 4 stops ½ (pressure). It's absolutely not the same sounds and the same playing (expression with wind)...
Can someone explain to me why they feel that Wodehouse is good at the harmonium? It seems like she has chosen the wrong instrument or perhaps the wrong music for the instrument. The harmonium is the Orgue Expresif I see and hear none of that here, in fact it almost seems as though she thinks its a piano. Any thoughts?
