Try making one yourself, you will probably fail, but it's a cool experience, you will see that it's not so simple as it looks like.

Is the cup piece (sorry I am not familiar with teh proper name) on this Berimbau filled? I ask as the ones sound sounds almost like a shaker to me and I have never heard this with other Berimbau.

the shaking you hear is from the Caxixi (lil shaker basket) in my hand.
