Social media formed the bookends for the second annual Maryland Business and Accounting Expo in Baltimore.

R2Integrated CEO Matt Goddard helped kick things off on June 16 with a high-energy look at how businesses can turn the social media hype into real value. His key message: Businesses continue to do the things they've always done in terms of connecting, communicating and collaborating; social media tools just give them new and improved ways of doing them.

The Expo wrapped up on June 17 with an insightful panel discussion featuring some of the most renowned social media advocates in the worlds of finance and accounting. They included: * Rick Telberg, principal for Bay Street Group, editor-at-large for the American Institute of CPAs and creator of the CPA Trendlines blog. * Francine McKenna, president of McKenna Partners and creator of the Re: The Auditors blog. * Alexandra DeFelice, senior editor for the Journal of Accountancy. * Edith Orenstein, director of Accounting Policy Analysis for Financial Executives International and author of FEI's Financial Reporting Blog. * Will Burns, communications director for the Maryland Chamber of Commerce.

The panelists offered ideas for how businesses should approach social media, discussed some social media success stories and answered a provocative question: Is social media optional anymore? (Their short answer: No.)

The panel was moderated by Bill Sheridan, editor for the Maryland Association of CPAs and manager of the MACPA's social media efforts.
