Culture of peace and non-violence on agenda of solemn event in Minsk

On 2 October the UN Office in Belarus in cooperation with the Embassy of India organized the solemn ceremony to mark the International Day of Non-violence and 141st birthday of the great political and spiritual leader of India Mahatma Gandhi.

The event conducted in the Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship got together representatives of India-Belarus Friendship Society, religious communities, diplomatic corps, educational institutions and national mass media.

Citing famous words of Mahatma Gandhi from his "Story of my experiments with truth" book - "There are many causes that I am prepared to die for but no causes that I am prepared to kill for." - the UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus Antonius Broek said that the United Nations can be considered, in many instances, as the follower of Gandhi's ideas of non-violence and tolerance.

Mr. Broek recalled that the UN General Assembly has proclaimed period from August 2010 till August 2011 as the International Year of Youth with the theme "Dialogue and Mutual Understanding".

"This year brings a good opportunity for all of us and, especially for young people, to promote the ideals of respect for human rights, non-violence, tolerance and solidarity across generations, religions, cultures, and civilizations. Dialogue and mutual understanding should be key elements that contribute to bringing a sustainable peace", said Mr. Broek.

The solemn ceremony has also included a cultural input of Bharatanatyam (Indian classical dance) by 'Indivara' Dance Group and Violin Recital by students of Belarusian State Academy of Music.
