Gradius - thunder force & even ikaruga own R-type XD
Gradius is better than R-type because of the musics - tough bosses - Graphics & even 2 player mode ^_^
thunder force is better than R-type because of the same reason but only the problem is the 2 player mode ^_^
ikaruga in everything better than R-type XD
OH and one last thing ^_^
i think none had noticed that R-type may was also made from konami because it was in MSX while konami was mostly making the best MSX games ^^

you're posting this on a gradius video, so of course most people here are going to say gradius V is better (myself included :)

however, that was the general opinion I got via google (search for "best ps2 scrollshooter", or something similar), when I was figuring out which to buy.

it's a bit rare to find nowadays... I could not find it in any store (like EB games, etc.) so just bought it online (on ebay, ~$25 w/ shipping)

It's amazingly difficult, but fun. So although more expensive than most ps2 games (most are <= $10 these days), I'd recommend it.

I have been a Gradius fan ever since I first saw Gradius frist version... 1985... I was 1st Grade... Today Gradius never stop to amuse me... For those who is not a gradius player they never understand that cockpit is the weak point of Vick Viper "Gradius"... I wish... I have a PS2 so that I can bet the game... Because I'll understand the thrill of "THE NEVER ENDING DODGING, HAND AND EYE COORDINATION BEST SHUMP EVER"...
