In July 2005, the St John Boste Social Club committee announced the centre, which started out as a Catholic school in 1898, would close after 25 years. It said that falling membership and stricter licensing controls meant it could not afford to continue.
Two years later the General Practice Group -- which builds facilities for the delivery of primary care health services, bought the building, and planning permission was sought and granted for a new multi-million pound GP surgery in 2008.
The redevelopment will see the buildings razed to the ground and re-created in a traditional style.
A spokeswoman for South Lakeland District Council said: "Cherished features of the frontage will be re-created using original stonework."
