I've got Openoffice 3 beta. No, X11 is not required. You can download it from: download(.)openoffice(.)org/3.0beta/
take away the parenthesis for URL to work.

I wonder, that OpenOffice 3 still needs X11 to be installed under MacOSX... I thought it would be one of the major features that it supports the aqua-interface natively.
Do you know anything about that?
I can't find a download-link for the OpenOffice 3 beta-release, can you help please?
