Another track form the Early Years...This is another big band number where the singer is still regarded as an accessory. This would be 1940 and Frank was just settling in with the Tommy Dorsey Band.

Frank is still learning his craft and is some years away from attaining his 'Chairman of the Board' and 'ole Blue eyes' dominance.
However, he was becoming the star attraction with the 'Bobby Sox' generation of young women - they were becoming aware of him through radio broadcasts and were rushing out to buy his records
The Bands of the Swing era were the best vehicles for an aspiring singer to use to become a star in their own right. -- And it was quickly becoming a two way traffic in celebrity exchange.
The Band is the Tommy Dorsey Swing Band, which was becoming a hothouse for singing talent -- Having signed up Jo Stafford and the Pied Pipers,( the harmony group of which Jo was a founder member) among other top singers.
In the photo of the Dorsey Band Frank is on the extreme right at the back with the rest of the band's Singers.

  • Music hath charms. This is the proof, and it is not imagination - at least as far as I am concerned.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Thank goodness they didn't have technology like we have today for recordngs. The recordings at tht time were done from beginning to end without pause. If someone made a flaw whether the vocalist or one of the musicianbs they would have to start all over until they got right. So these old recording of the 30s and 40s and maybe into the early 50s are real time sessions. What a treasure these od records are.

  • Jeanserge 21:

"Frank Sinatra who was not as popular as Tommy Dorsey"--not yet!

There was much importance put on billing by the artists back then, so comment is astute.

  • @KillaVonDilla No, this is really him believe it or not. The very first recording he ever made, I'll Never Smile Again, has Frank with this exact same voice, circa 1940. This was before the throat polyps changed his voice forever.

  • wow early class i love early frank

  • Great post-actually recorded on 10th April 1940-Dorsey always made Sinatra sing in a higher key than he wanted to, thats why when he went solo his voice seems deeper, but he's just come down to his comfortable key.

  • @holydiver73 It´s FAS!

He was very young, I have the LP & CD!

  • Everyday should be like this- so cool with Frank, raychapa01.

  • The early years were my fav Sinatra. The Big Band sound with his vocals are just incredible. Thanks for the uploads!! :)

  • Thank you for posting your collection.

  • Back then, you had a songwriter, a lyrics writer, a band of top-notch musicians & a great singer (or singers) to play music like this--that's why it's soooooooo great! The best, in fact.

  • @renrifle hey hey hey there is good stuff that is more recent w/o autotune. You may not swing with rock but yes music is over produced since computers got involved. Those little mistakes were character like the grain and "flaws" in fine tooled leather that give it style and originality. Music is too perfect now its soul has been bleached out esp with autotune. But even as a child of the 60's / 70's rock. You can't like music and ignore this stuff. It helped form modern rock
