Laney wrapped up our experience perfectly (see below) and I can only continue to hope and push and fight for animal shelters in New Orleans to get the proper funding needed to survive:
Okay, this is awesome and I'm proud of us and all, AND let's think about what this really is. In most cities, well-meaning people do not need to take it upon themselves to crawl under buildings to rescue puppies. They have people who are ...paid, as part of Animal Control, and trained, and who do not have to take off work (Jacob) or interrupt self-employment (Melanie) or stop watching youtube videos (me) to rescue dogs. In New Orleans, according to several sources, money for Animal Control is severely decreased this year. (http://la-spca.org/Page.aspx?pid=553). Without people like Jacob who round up their friends and stick them under buildings to grab puppies, or bring stray dogs to Dr. Reidel to spay and neuter them, the pet population would be out of control. As much as this was a valuable experience, it was also a reminder of how little support animal shelters have in controlling the pet population in the city.
