CN 418 - Slave Lake, Alberta... CN 5379 (SD-40) in the lead.. Eastbound on CN's Slave Lake Sub... 12,500 ton train with 2 SD-40's and a GP-40... Busy morning with lots of vehicles a crossing... I sound like such a geek when my conductor and I are talking about the truck we thought was going to try to beat us, I had a cold and we thought it was gonna be close...

  • Blow BEFORE the crossing, not after you have crossed it.

  • @robertgift Not quite sure what your refering to... there was a large trespasser problem in Slave Lake a number of years ago, and so there are some extra whistle posts in place where we sound there whistle (rule 14L) because of this... I believe that is the extra whistle you are talking about...

  • @ELLBeans that's a fair comment - but just a couple of comments on it - not trying to cause a fight, just give you my opinion - first off, not all whistles stop blowing the moment you release the valve - that seems to be the case in this video; Second - I can not ignore any whistle post - as I am held criminally liable if I do and am then invovled in an incident; and third, I've been involved in crossing accidents/fatalities, and I am just doing what I can to not go through it again...

  • hey i live there could you keep the noise down..joking..cool video

  • LOL! And we usually come throught there in the early morning on 418, so I know it sucks... but we gotta whistle... Thanks for watching!

  • It's up hill both way into Slave Lake - The second signalled crossing is 20 mph until occupied, so I had throttled off to reduce speed from 25 mph - then I had to throttle back up to pull the train over the hill - The engine was have loading problems, and was also having trouble maintaining it's RPM in high throttle positions....

  • I find most of the drivers that go through Slave Lake don't know how to properly use the horn.

  • hey did the bridge N of smith burnt down.

  • YOU DONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT NOW. SINCE IT BURNT TO THE GROUND.

  • wow ocs. big fuckin deal

  • smith bunk house was the worst to sleep in. used to drive these boys there in taxi.

  • I live in slave lake, and when the train pass`s threw main street about 3:15. im mad. we got school ya` know >.>

  • Robertgift. You are aware that the 4th horn blow is supposed to start before the crossing and be continued through the crossing until its fully occupied. Any whistle post has the requirement to be blown ... even tho many don't at the locations where they are not crossings. Pedestrian/bike paths, curves, tunnels, private crossings etc with posts all need to be blown.

  • @ELLBeans If my grade crossing horn sequence is going to span 18 seconds, make the warning start earlier and conclude AT the crossing, not after because after is worthless and accomplishes nothing but annoying nearby residents.

To avoid annoying residents, I would disregard the extra non grade crossing whistle posts unless I saw some potential trespassers. Then only brief blasts.

Lousy horns. Lower frequencies travel farther.
