In this video, I explore the homology that bacterial flagellum shares with a number of proteins, and conclude that for over 50% of the flagellum there is no evidence from sequence homology that the flagellum was co-opted from precursor parts. For the remaining sequence homologies of the flagellum that pre-dates the flagellum, convergent evolution, rather than common descent, might be a candidate explanation. Since convergent evolution can result in both structural homology at the protein level and sequence homology at the amino acid level, there is no reason to treat the common descent explanation for homology as the default one. Instead, independent evidence is needed to verify both explanations.

Note that the idea that the homology the flagellum shares with other proteins is explained by common design, rather than common descent, is not really testable and should therefore not be posited as a real explanation.
