James Baldwin in an interview with dr Kenneth Clark in 1963
it is all incredibly lucid.
The last question, oh, that question is still waiting for an answer.

  • James Baldwin - the most brilliant star in the firmament of mid-century genius!

I do believe that his time was the apex of American intellectual (though of course not political or moral) culture.

  • I agree, we need to become better than we all are, we need a new renasance

  • "If you think I'm a nigger, it means you need it."

  • I believe what he was saying that there was a question that he believed white america (who whether through apathy or direct involvement) supported the idea of white racial superiority and the institutions and/or practices that enable and promote that kind of thinking needs to ask itself why it feels the need for it to be necessary to have a "nigger" in the first place...in other words, "Why is the need for a whole race of people to be categorized as "less than"..

  • I miss James Baldwin so much.

  • The problem with African Americans today, is trying to connect themselves with current celebrities, people who have nothing to offer positive, much like Britney Spears or Paris Hilton. I'm Hispanic, but my role models are those who changed the lives of millions, not because they can play guitar or something, but because they were incredible human beings.

Any African Americans reading this, please reply: Have you read Frederick Douglass? What a lesson his life is.

  • i think the reason for having a "nigger" is to justify the sickening treatment of black people by white people from the very start of slavery. (and before that, because they must've been incredibly blinded by their white supremacist beliefs to even begin to think that slavery or any kind of discrimination was an option) but i dont know yet why the whole "white supremacist" thing got started back in europe before any white people came across the atlantic

  • Strange, that I grew up in this era, was at the time aware of the perceived divergence of their views, yet it's only in looking back that I can discern how picayune were the supposed differences, how much more they actually held in common, and how the prevailing culture was able to portray them as opponents, rather than pilgrims on the same journey.

  • Que hombre mas inteligente. Esa pregunta al final - muy interesante y nunca la he oido hecho en los discursos politicos en este pais.

  • well said

  • This country is violent. That is the violence that continues to beget violance. How much impact has non-violent action had on these obscene vengeful wars in which our country is engaged.

  • Wow.

  • in their latter days, malcolm and matin both seemed to gravitate in each other's direction on the spectrum that people have put them on in terms of violence and militance. this is just what i know from what i have read about them.

thanks to the poster. i really think seeing this man and hearing his voice is important to me as i have only ever read his words.

  • thank you for the comment

  • yes indeed

  • Few people have wrote about the "real Harlem" as Mr. Baldwin! Truly one of the best writers of the 20th century. Thank you for posting.
