http://www.ipsf.com We provide tips on using and maintaining your DIY Nano Lagoon light hood (see also part a).

1) Clean the acrylic lens twice a week with a wet terry cloth to remove salt spray.

2) Wipe the edges of the hood to prevent salt creep.

3) Prop open the top access door to vent off heat if necessary.

4) Use a cheap timer on a 12/12 on/off cycle to reduce daily wear and tear on the lamp switch.

5) Remove the acrylic hood lens and replace the power compact bulbs once a year. Reseal the edges of the lens with aquarium silicon to keep out seawater.

6) Consider making a backup light hood as insurance against malfunction. Consider keeping a spare Aquatech 5-15 Power Filter on hand for the same reason. [This general precaution applies to mission-critical hardware components on all reef tank systems!]

Please use only captive-bred organisms in your reef aquarium.

  • You vids appear to be very helpful. I wish you would fix the high pitched whistle in the audio though. Very annoying.

  • @algolake That whistling is the sound of high-volume air blowers running in the background. It is a feature of most large land-based mariculture facilities.

  • We need to know, how do you remove the seal so you can change the bulbs? Is there a different way to seal off the system so it would be easier to change the bulbs? Thanks and awsome idea, will do this if I can get an answer soon!

  • Once a year remove the acrylic lens and replace the bulbs. The seal is soft and it is easy to separate the lens from the hood. Lay down a new bead of silicone and replace the lens. It's a 10-minute job! If this is TOO much work for you then buy a NanoCube at four times the cost.

  • where did you buy the ballasts and stuff

  • These are self-ballasted bulbs! There is no external ballast. All of the equipment needed is shown in the video.

  • Do you have a dead spot in the center where the light doesn't project?

  • have anybody done this?and how is working out?

  • Had anyone tried doing this on a twenty gallon kit

  • Are... are you a wizard? XD

Seriously, man, this is AMAZING. You just saved me from buying a nano light system that would cost me lord knows how much money. Seriously, lighting is the only thing that has kept me from starting my first reef tank.

Also, I never thought of painting the inside of the 10 gallon hoods white for better reflection! Genius! I have an extra laying around somewhere that I tried converting into a CFL hood, but I went with a 20 gal. hood instead. Thank goodness I did!
