Shark Valley is on the north edge of the Everglades just off the Tamiami Trail. An arrow straight road leads to an observation tower that marks the spot of a long-ago petroleum test well. From the tower you have a grand view of the Pahayokee, the river of grass. You can hike, bike or take the tram on the five mile trip to the tower. Along the way you will see alligators in their natural habitat, carrion birds soaring in the thermals, anhingas and cormorants, turtle, and if you are lucky, some baby alligators. But be alert! Alligators wait along the trail for those who would venture too near.
