  • Hitchens should have gone a step further and stated that Dr. King called himself a socialist

  • The holy ghost got Mary pregnant; he must be male. So the christians have an HOMOSEXUAL TRINITY!!!

  • Religion is enslavement to an idea based on superstitious nonsense, possible alien intervention and sprinkled with a dash of compassion to make it palatable.

The followers must love, believe in, glorify and fear in order to enter the magic kingdom and if you don't, eternity in the kingdom of pain and suffering.

  • "King did not follow the bible literally."

I guess you could also make the case that no one has ever followed the bible literally. Sorry, you can not claim someone is less religious because you worship them and want them to fit your neat little ideology. Your revisionism is baseless, the man was a Baptist minister. Or, is it your contention that he was a phony and a fraud? Make up your mind please.

  • @drrobotnik999 good point. the evidence seems to be in favor that King himself saw himself as a Christian to the end. I could very well be wrong though.

  • i gather that the argument isn't over whether King claimed to be religious or not; he obviously claimed to be religious. the argument is over whether he followed the bible literally. King did not follow the bible literally.

how non-literal does one's interpretation of the bible have to be before they may no longer call themselves christian?

his other point is that there's no way to tell whether king's motivation was a result of his interaction with religious people/the church.

  • this is one place i disagree with hitchens, i think he's really reaching when he tries to prove King wasn't really religious. However, i fully agree with his statements about the negative effect of focusing on King as a reverend, and how that has fucked up the leadership of the civil rights movement ever since. but it seems from his writings and actions, King was a christian, unfortunately.

  • Love this! Crystal clear and self evident. The Q&A should be fun too!
