During there occupation, they were known not as Germans but as French. So, maybe that's the tribe you're thinking of...

@theblakedestroyer It was actually the ROMANS who beat the Gauls. Julius Ceaser won a decisive victory at Alesia and emperor Claudius finished the rest of them off in Britain. But the western half of the Roman Empire was brought under German control - do you mean the Germanic tribes?
