@mathshaw its not a furnace, more like a huge urn where it keeps all the ashes of the papers. what you're seeing is a chinese folkloric/taoist ritual of burning joss papers, usually in the gold, silver , copper colours and they are basiclaly offerings to the deceased in the spritual realm, and it is in China and can be found all over China, kinda enviromentally wasteful in my opinion but still pretty cool
