I made this way back in 1974 when there was no known film footage of Buddy Holly and no fictional feature film either. Using friends as actors, I shot this short movie on 16mm film and then set about distressing it. I was trying to get it to look like one of those 'telecast' movies that the TV companies would film of live broadcasts from a cathode ray tube in the 1950s.

Buddy recorded "Love's Made A Fool Of You" between late July and mid-August 1958 at the Norman Petty studios in Clovis, New Mexico. Buddy double tracked his vocal and played the rhythm guitar. Tommy Allsup played lead; George Atwood bass and Bo Clarke drums. Note this is the undubbed version that's never had an official release as far as I know. Norman Petty dubbed handclaps to it in 1964. "Love's Made A Fool Of You", along with "Wishing" from the same session, were recorded as demos for the Everly Brothers.

Tommy Allsup has recently completed a sell out tour in the UK (June 2008) with Kevin Montgomery. Tommy's 1964 classic album "The Buddy Holly Songbook" has been reissued on CD with "Country Classics" on Rollercoaster Records.

Note: Kevin's dad was Bob Montgomery, Buddy's friend and also co-writer of "Love's Made A Fool Of You".

  • The "Rosewood" fretboard and the "Large" Fender headstock, were an easy spot that this was a "Spoof".

But i have to say the spirit is all there, so well done, much RESPECT.

  • Thanks Tom. We tried very hard to get hold of an authentic Strat but no-one had one to lend or hire way back in 1973. The film was never intended a a spoof or to fool anyone. I made it originally as a basis for an animation I was going to do as a final year project for my university degree in film and television.

  • The whole film was captured in black and white then it was copied onto colour film stock with filters to give the illusion of very old colour film. I wanted the movie to have that "just found in an old trunk" look. The real Buddy does make a brief appearance at the end in very short animated series of still photographs.

  • does anyone know who is singing harmony, or did buddy overdub????

  • Hi, if you expand my notes at the top (where it says "more...") you'll find the session details. Buddy did double track his vocals.

  • WHo's the guy playing Buddy?

  • Buddy is played by Doug Smith, a fellow film student. We made it 35 years ago (1973) at the Royal College of Art. Doug is still working in film and video production.

  • Really nice job on this, and one of my favorite Buddy Holly songs.

  • I thought I had commented earlier, seems not. This is a Buddy "oscar worthy" effort! A very clever concept and flawless execution. Neat song choice also, featuring Tommy Alsup on the fluid lead guitar. One of my all time fave fan vids. I think Buddy himself would be proud of this. Cheers indeed!

  • Nice try - but you don't care you gonna try agin...

  • Well done.Mr Holly was a terrible loss to the music world.I saw him in Leicester UK just before my 13th birthday--Wow! I appreciate this film.Even if it was made as a study project it has gladdened the hearts of a lot of his fans. Many thanks!

  • Nice wee movie. The guy playing Buddy has a similarity. and adding the Alan Freed interview with your 1974 film.........is a nice touch too. Although 37 years later on....well done.

  • Very convincing! Hats of! Its really make belief. I enjoyed it very much! Thank you so mutch.

  • This is incredibly well done on every level.

I think you've done with film what they couldn't do today, even with all their digital light and magic

  • great and convincing. I remember so vividly waking up on the snowy Feb morning and hearing that Buddy had died.

    I just couldn't believe it. Sometimes I still don't!
