A review of my Schwartzbier mini-mash brew. Overall a very respectable beer. The recipe was based off Jamil's but didn't have enough Carafa Special so had to sub in some other roasted malts. These malts actually mellowed into a very nice light coffee note.

5.5 Gallons/21 Liters
6.05 lbs Briess Pilsener Bulk LME
.52 lbs Cane Sugar
1.01 lbs Munich Malt
.40 lbs Cara Special (was actually a blend of CS III, chocolate rye and chocolate malt.)
O.G. 1.049
Final 1.008
White Labs 0830 German Lager Yeast
Fermented at 50F
Lager for 4 weeks at 34F

  • Man, I agree about the dry malt extract. I find it muddies the taste, and it's like tasting the flower in the gravy, if you know what I mean. Partial extract brewing with LME and some grains can produce some pretty damn good beer IMO. Watch for my video on dressing up a Cooper's English Bitter.

  • @CraigTube Can't say that I've tasted flowers in my gravy. You messed me up for a second on that one. Uh, please tell me that was a typo.

  • @yartp LOL, no I meant flour that you add to the gravy to thicken it. Sorry hehe.

  • Its a very nice looking beer - I don't think i've ever tried that style before.
