Famed comics creator Alan Moore recites the main chorus from a song his former band, The Emperors of Ice Cream, created entitled "Mr. A.", inspired by the Objectivist comics super hero of the same name created by Steve Ditko. The creation of Moore's memorable Watchmen character Rorschach was heavily influenced by Ditko's Mr. A.

This clip was featured on BBC Four's "Jonathan Ross in Search of Steve Ditko" (from 9/17/2007). It's a great documentary delving into Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko's reclusive nature, his work's influence on modern comics, and asks why he receives such little credit for his marvelous works. Featuring interviews with Alan Moore, Mark Millar, Neil Gaiman, Stan Lee and more, this documentary is quite entertaining, and I highly recommend seeking it out.

For more information on the documentary and Steve Ditko's life, check out these websites:

Enjoy!

Chorus Lyrics:

He had one room above a thrift store.
He had a trunk of books by Ayn Rand.
He was short-sighted and reclusive,
resisting pleas to take his photograph.

He drew a superhero comic.
He saw the world in terms of black and white.
He said, "A day's work for a day's pay,
that is our one and only right."

He takes a card and shades one half of it in dark
so he can demonstrate to you just what he means.
He says, "There's black and there is white, and there is wrong, and there is right, and there is nothing, nothing in between."

That's what Mr. A said.

  • he scares me

  • You can tell Mr. A's an objectivist just from the enormous size of his word-flooded speech balloons.

  • @PlanetMan77 Nevermind, it sounds like it actually is from the Velvet Underground's Sister Ray, I just kind find where in the 16-minute long song.

  • What's the music in the background from? Is that the real riff from "Mr. A" or something?

  • CAN'T SLEEP, ALAN MOORE WILL EAT ME O.o

  • Moore does not understand Rand--so naive!

  • God, that Freeze frame in the end...

I saw the blackness of abyss, and the horror of mere being...

  • Moore looks like he'd shank someone in a parking lot.

  • This isn't enough. We want Moore footage!

  • Mr. A rules.
