'Streets of Derry', by Al O'Donnell from the album 'Al O'Donnell', released in 1972.

----------------------------------------

Lyrics:

Now after morning there comes an evening,
And after evening, another day,
And after false love, there comes a true love,
I'll have you listen now to what I say.

My love he is as fair a young man,
As fair as any the sun shone on,
But how to save him, I do not know,
For now he's got a sentence to be hung,

As he was marching through the streets of Derry,
I'm sure he marched up right manfully,
He marched more like a commanding officer,
Than a man to die, upon the gallow's tree,

What keeps my love, she's so long a'coming,
Oh what detains her so long from me,
Perhaps she thinks that it's a shame, a scandal,
For a man to die upon the gallow's tree,

He looked around and he saw her coming,
As she rode swifter than the wind,
She said, "I'll show them that they cannot hang you,
And I'll crown my love with a bunch of green."

  • Al O donnell IS THE ONLY MAN/WOMAN who can sing this song properly. He is to ballad and folk singing as Tony Macmahon or Joe Cooley is to playing the box.He is a genius

  • Absolutely, he did a fantastic job of this song. To me he fits in the list of Nic Jones, Paul Brady, Martin Carthy, et al.

  • This is a very good version. I've only heard two versions, the other being Andy Irvine and Paul Brady's, which is also great.

  • Al O'Donnell does a mighty job of this song.

  • Four thousand seven hundred views for this man. Shows what happens with the passage of time. We forget greatness.

  • never thought I'd say it but this is almost as sweet as Luke Kelly doing Raglan Road or The Unquiet Grave.

  • A voice tinged with a beautiful Dublin accent singing this song better than I have ever heard it sung!

  • I could not agree with you more, he sings it so beautifully.

  • Great Pic of Al as I remember him in the 60s!

  • I heard Al for the first time in Dortmund with the Dubliners and it was great. I never heard him before but he impressed me so much during the concert that i bought me a cd. and all of his cd s were sold out after the concert so i was not the only person who thought like this........

    Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • @tazio2 Agreed!....Al was doing it when there was little money or fame involved...he had/ has a unique style. He sang ...never roared or engaged in stage irishism...no names mentioned ...I have to live in this town!
