This video shows the two main defenses against a mawashigeri attack for kihon ippon kumite. This type of partner work is studied at the intermediate level of 6th kyu through 4th kyu ranks.
@iBeansOnToasTi Thank you for your response and thanks also for the definition of KIHON. After 27 years I had forgot. This is not a drill for lower grades - it is a drill for those people who are at an appropriate level to learn kihon ippon kumite. With that in mind the peson executing the kicks should set a clear example for the 'lower grades' to kick with better kihon waza. The footballer may dribble around cones at the beginning - but they still have to do it correctly. Ossu
Nope. The attacker still goes for his/her target but uses control. This is just drills for lower belts. Kihon means basic. A football/soccer player will dribble a ball around cones, thats there basic drill. The next step may be replacing the cones with people.
@BushiWaazup have to agree with you here. If this is a 'training drill' then isn't the attacker training themselves to do half-hearted, lazy, sloppy kicks and the attacker training themselves for pre-determined kicks in places they expect. I do watch Lyoto and from his training through to his kumite he would never do anything like this. I think you can put a little more into this without injury and more can be gained
@BushiWaazup This whole series of training drills is not meant to be preparation for fighting all of the people you mention, they are simply... training drills! They are ways to help beginner and intermediate students match up their attacks and defences. We all know that a weak block against a strong kick is susceptible to injury and any Shotokan black belt worth his salt would use his movement instead of his basic blocks - just watch Lyoto Machida. Thanks for your comment.
