First of two nocturnes for solo piano dating from 1925/1926.

Alexander Mosolov (1900-1973) was a part of the Soviet Avant-Garde prominent in the 1920s. He was oppressed by the RAPM (Russian Association of Proletarian Musicians) for writing inaccessible and highly pessimistic music; i.e., not conforming to Soviet Realism. By 1929 his compositions were banned and in 1936 he moved to Central Asia to collect folk music. From then until his death, Mosolov abandoned his earlier compositional style and wrote tame often folk-inspired works.

  • could you PLEASE help me by telling me where to find Mosolov's sheet music? Thanks a lot

  • genius!!!!! mosolov is such an inspiration for my composing.

  • They actually banned his music? How idiotic o_O

Interesting guy -- I'd never even heard of Mosolov until now. This piece is really strange ... but it is beautiful in its own, eerie way.

    Thanks for uploading! =D

  • thanks for the Mosolov-uploads!

    Great music!

  • Thank you for this! That's a menacing, foreboding, nightmarish nocturne , completely the opposite of Chopin's flowery poetic dreamscapes. Sounds like Kubrick would have love this in one of his films.

  • Extremely interesting. Thank you for letting me hear this.

  • thanks for sharing!

  • No, the piano isn't prepared. It's just a regular piano. The way the song is written is what makes that different sound you here.
