Battle of Brooklyn: Long Island-St. Francis (NY) Men's Basketball Game Highlights (2/6/10)

In perhaps the best game of the year thus far in the NEC, it was St. Francis (NY) that snared this years Battle of Brooklyn trophy with an 88-84 triple overtime victory over Long Island at the Wellness, Recreation & Athletic Center in a NEC-televised game live on MSG Network. The February 6th game featured 14 ties and 11 lead changes until St. Francis (NY) was able to finally pull away in the third extra session and snap a four-game losing streak in the series.

The first and second overtime periods featured no lack of drama. With St. Francis (NY) trailing by three in the first overtime, the Terriers Stefan Perunicic drilled a long three with 16 seconds left on the clock to knot the score at 66. LIUs Jaytornah Wisseh had a chance for the win, but his shot was blocked at the buzzer by Herman Wrice. LIU appeared to have the game in hand in the second extra session after it rattled off eight straight points, but the Terriers rallied with a Herman Wrice layup followed by a Ricky Cadell three-point play to cut a seven-point lead down to one with 36 seconds remaining. LIUs Kyle Johnson hit two foul shots for LIU to make it 76-73 with 15 seconds to play. On the ensuing possession, Cadell was able to get free for a three-pointer and tie the contest with 6.1 seconds left. LIU freshman Corey Wright drove the length of the court on the inbounds play, but his shot was off the mark at the buzzer.

Cadell earned the Lai-Lynch Trophy as the games Most Valuable Player after scoring 21 points for the Terriers in a career-high 52 minutes of action.
