i just wanted to share that i am a college student away from home for the first time...whenever i've gotten homesick or discouraged i've played this video and it would comfort me. i'm now finishing my first year, thank you!
@mjahdoo Actually, the original name given the tune by its composer was "Abeel". It wasn't until it appeared in publication that its name was changed to "General Seminary", an acknowledgment of where it was written and first sung.
@mjahdoo I believe that the tune name is "General Seminary" because this hymn tune was composed for use at General Seminary in NYC and is their "official hymn" so to speak. I'm on the Commission on Ministry for the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland (and also an organist and choirmaster myself) and a lot of the ordinations that I attend for General graduates through my work with the COM use this hymn at some point during the service for that reason.
As a graduate of General Seminary, I don't find the tune at all dull; and I love this hymn. Thank you so much for posting it. It makes me a little homesick for my seminary days.
We usually sing this hymn to Gwalchmai, and tho' I've heard this tune before I don't know its name. Anybody?

Try listening to the same hymn sung at the National Cathedral in Washington....also on YouTube! This is great, but that is transcending!!!!

The tune is "General Seminary", a rather dull name, but a gorgeous hymn.
