Her recording of it on the 1960 album "Christmas With Leontyne Price" is far superior to this live performance. She was beyond her prime here and her breath support and nuance had declined. The 1960 recording however is truly angelic.

A beautiful rich voice, but... I know this piece well. Price does not articulate the words clearly, slurring over them. She also does not modulate smoothly, preferring to belt it out. This is not opera, its a quiet hymn, sung with desperation and subdued intensity. There is also some sliding on the vowels, which is less than desirable. It is not so much how she sings it, but what she leaves out: there is no interpretation, it is flat, like a race to be run. Listen to Kiri Te Kanawa instead

Her voice gives me chills......she was the best of the best IMHO

@JRobbySh That she does. I heard her farewell recital at the Met in person, but that was a recital and at the end of her career, but still amazing. WOW. I only wish I had heard her in operas.

Would loved to have heard this in person. She fills the hall.
