I walked and hitched on this road in 1968. No much traffic then, except for the NVA. Fortunately I was hidden at the side of the road having dysentry when they passed. I had come down from Vientiane by road (bus and canoe), no other Europeans (except the odd Russian or CIA). All bridges had been blown up. We crossed by canoe, changing the bus all the time.
Now that was a time to travel in SE Asia.
That is, if you were crazy or indestructible.

The lao people are very kind and gentle. But at the present time, Laos is under Vietnamese control. They can't help it. I live in Loas for many years and I'm aware of their mentality. Very compassionated people. You have to understand the situation. They sometimes, need some helps so they can live their lives better.

leaveing Laos and entering Cambodia. can this be the road? es thats it alright.
Yeah this is the only road south for the moment.
The first checkpoint is the Laos customs who were pretty cursory - though trying to explain that their colleagues at Chong Mek had knocked off @1630 and therefore not issued the paperwork made things a lttle difficult.
After meeting the combi bus drivers the red road looks great but isn't open to traffic yet, and you need to take the track turning off to the right which is 6kms of deep waterfilled potholes. Just take easy & slow.
AND hafe fun!
