I got this yesterday, as a gift from a friend of my grandparents. It's a very old guitar banjo. Apparently, it's been kept in a bag there for about 50 years, never played. Looking at the slight wear on the freatboard and bridge, and the fact that neck has clearly been broken and glued (without repairing the lacquer), it has been played by someone before that, so it must be a pretty old one.
Since I like the sound of a banjo better for playing tunes better, I put a set of tenor banjo strings on it. Soon I will go on to restore the instrument - sand off the old coating and give it a new one, brush up the skin, etc. I think it is definitely worth the effort, it's got a very nice sound.
For those who want to know, the tunes are two Irish reels, called "The Merry Blacksmith" and "The gravelwalks".
Well done, and a real crowdpleaser tune too. Bruce Thomson in New Zealand.

very interesting .... thanks for sharing. It will be interesting to see how your restoration comes out and what you can do with the instrument.
knowing your talent ... you will "bring it back to life" making it sing more than ever before.
