Some sopranos, and their musical directors, go for high notes, enunciation, authenticity, adherence to composer's instructions: Mme. Caballe happens to get all those attributes right. Eh voila! Stupendous music.

While current operatic trends tend to favor the Hollywood idea of beauty, eg. Angela, Renee, or Anna, over the classical vocal greatness of such past singers as Ponselle, Melba or Destinn, give me the classically great singing any day. Such is the voice of Monserrat Caballe. Her performance of this beautiful aria recalls the great voices of the past; she is wonderful and enduring.
