interestingit's easy for me as a coda to agree...but lots of terps get "mixed messages" about being seperate from deafies for 'professional reasons'....forget about being an interpreting machine you are not a cold piece of software disconnected from a rich and vibrant people and their culture... you are human...don't let someone tell you that you're violating some interpreter ethic by socializing and continuing your study fo Deaf culture and language!!!
Deafies continue to encourage terps

@ASLinstructor2010 I think the overall point is to separate what you interpret and what you have as socialization. The only code of ethics that you risk violating when hanging out with Deaf buddies is DISCUSSING what you interpret. So, don't discuss it. Don't mention interpreting (your work), while chilling with friends. Deaf or hearing... most people don't actually like hearing about someone else's work anyways. =P just have fun with your friends,& cherish the amazing culture

hey, i am a CODA too. But I notice sometimes that interpreters do that. however, interpreters have their code of professional conduct that they need to follow. When they are out interpreting for the deaf community it is a different relationship versus once and always being a part of it like if you and I were interpreters.. but let's keep in mind there are some deaf people who interact and take advantage of other deaf people too and then leave. especially churches..

Thank you so much for this! It really helps keep things in perspective. Awesome job. You are such a great guy! I went to your musical workshop in OKC and I've learned so much from you! Thank you!

@codawann Oooh! Snap!
I noticed that deaf would take advantage of interpreters for free, by asking them to help interpret for something. That is putting interpreters on the 'Spot'. I tried to put myself in the interpreter's shoes and visualized what would happen.
Do white Spanish interpreters hang out in Hispanic community, celebrate Cinco De Mayo, or even by food from Mexican food stores? I doubt that. Maybe during their training. Just my thought.

@BigBenFactor all i ask is that white spanish interpreters have friends from the latino community - my point is that most just come to the deaf to learn and never make true friendship
i have many deaf friends that i do not interpret for, and many that i interpret for that are not my friends - you missed the point...

@Jimactor and it's too bad you are not a real actor - what does my hearing status have to do with the message, are you implying that being a coda I have no right to cherish my first language. when did you learn sign language?
