I've never heard this great mvt played as movingly before or since, even the saintly Schnabel fails to convey this other worldly intensity as Solomon does.

This performance has a great sense of gravitas, without sacrificing the musical line development.
An incredibly moving performance!

I think after comparing this is my favorite Hammerklavier.

I've been waiting too long for this. :)
This was one of the sonatas whih led me into loving classical music. Except that the music I heard was from a free domain music site. And I thought some unknown person named Daniel Veesey was a good pianist.
Anyway, thank you for uploading this. I can see(listen) why this Hammerklavier is so highly regarded.

one of the great legendary recorded performances of this work I still have the EMI two disc set of the late sonatas played by Solomon -a life affirming performance -a great pity that he suffered a stroke and was unable to play whilst still a relatively young man. He often went to concerts and heard other pianist of his generation there is a video of him playing the appassionatta which is absolutely stunning it should still be available -worth seeking out his technique and attack was amazing

Thank you for making miserable, study ridden nights easier to cope with.
