Here is an observation and open question. In 1986 with bipartisan support, machine guns were declared illegal. We did not have civil war in the streets back then. Yet our second amendment rights were infringed upon. There was no political will to defeat that legislation then or now. So the question is, what if there is bipartisan support this time? What would make this time any different from the last? If it wasn't worth blood in the streets in 1986, what makes it worth blood today?

Machine guns have been regulated since 1934, but never entirely banned. Also, what you are referring to happened under Reagan (!), so just imagine how much worse our current president will infringe on our rights...

In 2009 a directive from Secretary Clinton to Andrew J. Shapiro US Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs instructed him to restructure ITAR importation policy. The directive was to eliminate 80% of all small arms/munitions direct commercial import sales within 8 years. He cut imports by 40% within 36 months of taking office and 80% within 48.

It may appear that the President has largely left gun owners right intact, however nothing could be farther from the truth. The President had recognized early in his Administration that he could not be re-elected if any effort was aimed at gun control. So he directed the BATF to enforce existing laws to the strictest degree possible. According to a ATF friend of mine in Fresno, this has eliminated 41% of the mom and pop gun shops in his 1st 4 years in office.
