June 2008 - Video I took while in Pocahontas, VA which we discovered on the drive to the Pocahontas Coal Mine Tour. This is the coat company's store built in 1893 which just collapsed in mid 2007! They cleared out most of the excess and this is what is left. Shocking to see. I need a tripod for zooming! These videos will be redone, joined with pics and put together later. This is just temporary.

  • Damn, i remember when we drove by and this place had fallen...i was so shocked

  • We were so shocked when we saw it, too! We were just back there the first weekend in October - and they have cleared out everything down to the basement, but not those few outside walls. We were shocked to see how much more the metal front buildings just past the Co. store have collapsed now, too! They look terrible!! They are trying to save the Opera House/City Hall/court/jail and working on that but it's very slow going. And meanwhile, the old firehouse next to it has only an outside wall

  • I agree that the funds are minimal, but I must say that I am on the Fire Department in this town... We all ( at the department) have more then willingly volunteered to help remove this eye sore. It is absolutly dangerous! Just the other day I saw two young boys playing around he 2x4's that are holding it up. One of those 'stilts' falls and the front falls onto the street... this is pitiful!

  • Yes, guess that is dangerous & kids will be kids. omeone told me when i was there that they have to keep chasing kids away from playing on it. However, it is also an "attraction" of sorts as it certainly made US stop & have a closer look - at the whole town for that matter when we were just passing thru to the Coal Mine. We didn't expect to this. We made a 2nd trip back because of all these buildings Have spent 3-4 days there so far. It's fascinating; we researched it's history & everything!

  • I wish they did a better job of resoting the town. So much history

  • They were planning to restore the company store when it fell down! they are working on the opera house,....but the funds are just not there for all the other places that need it. It's a very small town now and their budget can only cover so much. It's a shame because so many of those buildings are gorgeous and i think it's very different with their STEEL fronts!
