Here is an old Arkla Servel air cooled natural gas fired chiller. It is a 5 ton model ACB60, and I have a service manual for it. I'm not sure how to date these, but I guess it is from the late 1960's. My Grandparents had one of these when I was a kid. I remember it worked ok, but had a lot of service calls to keep it going. I haven't seen one of these operating in about 20 years. This one is still hooked up, but I'm sure it would take a lot of work to get it going again.

  • are these units common where you live

  • @MrTrainer1200 They were more common in the 1980's, and earlier. The last one in my neighborhood was pulled out in 1992. It was the loudest air conditioner in the neighborhood.

  • ah HA... I told them they were real.... No one believed me lol.

  • @HACKER71000 LOL, I've had that same problem! phantom3rdchannel has a video of one in operation.

  • does that use gas when the airconditioning is on?

  • @fquindara yes.

  • @nomebear

Can you tell me the name of the company or companies?

I want one for my mobile home in Ca. I hope to convert it to work on solar during the day.

  • The Japanese took the American designed, 47% efficient Arkla Servel ammonia gas absorption chiller, refined it, made it capable of 98% efficiency, coupled the system to thermal solar panels to further boost the heat and the result is an extremely efficient residential air conditioner with Toyota level reliability. When will Americans ever learn that "just OK" doesn't cut it? People get tired of talking to and giving all of their hard earned cast to repairmen. Now the Chinese are making them.

  • @Vinylrecordsneverdie works like a refrig. in a camper

  • Robur still has parts for the Arkla Servel units, you can reach them at 812 424-1800

  • i would like to purchace a arkla servel unit as i would need it for parts does anyone have one that is not in complete operation or one that they dont want anymore
