Lee's Summit man died late Wednesday night after crashing his car while attempting to elude Independence police, authorities said.

According to investigators, Independence officers tried to pull 40-year-old Anthony Jones over on a traffic violation at Highway 40 and Sterling Avenue, but he would not stop. Officer Tom Gentry said Jones didn't have a license plate on his car.

The pursuit ended in Raytown when Jones lost control of his Pontiac Grand Prix at 59th Street and Sterling Avenue. Police said the car went over a brick wall, hit a basketball goal, and overturned, landing between two houses. Jones died at the scene.

Homeowner Sandy Smith heard the impact of the crash.

"Something hit something really loudly -- I've never experienced that loud a noise before," Smith told KMBC.

Authorities said Jones didn't have a valid driver's license and that he was wanted on a probation violation issued in Grandview.
