The Special Flight Attendant Tribute is a pictorial history of Delta Air Lines Flight Attendants from their beginning in 1940 as part of a small regional airline up through today as part of the world's largest global airline. It shows many of the different uniforms worn during this transition.

  • Deltas’ first Stewardess, Birdie Perkins, was hired in 1940. The airline continued to use females in this position until the first Purser was hired in 1946. The term Flight Attendant came to use in the 1970s. I don’t remember the name of the first black Stewardess hired by Delta, but it was sometime in the mid-sixties as I remember.

  • Love it!

Thanks for sharing. It's getting hard up there

    in the sky. The job ain't what it used to be;

but this made me feel proud.

    From American Airlines.

  • Yes, it has been terrible to witness the destruction of our industry and to see the degradation of what were the best jobs in the world. Thanks for all you do for the profession. The tribute is richly deserved.

  • Yes, that is correct. I have one of the limited addition prints of "Night Coach" Neil painted some great shots of Delta airplanes.

  • Missy,

I'm glad you enjoyed seeing your mother on my Tribute video. I'm sure this brings back fond memories for her as well.

  • OUTSTANDING !! ONE OF MANY TEAR JERKER YOUTUBE VIDEOS ON DELTA. I WAS

A VERY HAPPY DAL EMPLOYEE IN MSY 1964-2000. DELTA WAS DIFFERENT FROM

THE OTHERS. WE WERE TRULY LIKE FAMILY MEMBERS WHO CARED FOR EACH OTHER AND WORKED AS A TEAM. LOTS OF CHANGES IN THE INDUSTRY, BUT

THE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS THEN AND NOW ARE BEAUTIFUL HARD WORKING LADIES.

THIS VIDEO CELEBRATES OUR "GIRLS" AND I TOAST YOU. I'M ALWAYS LOOKING

FORWARD TO MY NEXT FLIGHT. SEE YOU SOON !! LET'S ROLL.

  • Oh! my gosh! Great memories....how wonderful it all was! I loved every minute and it does make one feel sad to see what has happened to our industry and the quality of it.....these day. Mimi Newton Boney - Class of 58........

  • @dakarbelle

yes that is her,......1.24. on the timer deal......I miss her.

  • Love it.

  • Delta Flight Attendants were younger and prettier in the past. Today, most of them are in their 50s and 40s....

  • Memories are made of this...

This seems to indicate Delta had female "stewardesses" (later "flight attendants") first, males later (picture of male "purser")? I believe Piedmont started with male stewards (perhaps because some were already pilots trained, and waiting cockpit billets?) and later came the female "stewardesses"? Did Delta have females first, followed by the males?

Note the ageing (and weight) progression as the pictures become more current. Who was Delta's first black F/A?

  • this video is absolutely beautiful and it really takes you back in time through delta's years FABULOUS FABLULOUS FABULOUS VIDOEO, I LOVE IT!!!!!! Thanks for posting it.

  • I think being an flight attdent in the 70s and 80s and 90s would be an blast now it seems boring
