At nighttime the "wölö" wander about the village and protect the maize from stealing. This day they were honored whith a celebration. After dancing on the village square they would move from compound to compound in order to get some money or peanuts.
September 2009 in the village of Fissadou near Kouroussa and the Niger river. Drummers: Nansadi Kourouma (djembe), Sakala Conde (djembe), Laye Kouyate (sangba), Mamady Camara (dundunba), Fode ... (Kensedeni) from Babila and Fissadou.

  • Another truly enjoyable experience. Beyond celebrating a particular yearly event, these people seem to be celebrating the fact that they are a community, which in a sense, makes them richer than their material posessions might suggest. The laughter that I see here is precious beyond gold.

Like said in the notes to the vid above, this is a particular event. But I think I know what you mean, it is a very warm social atmosphere in these celebrations. Each individual gets the attention of the community they want in the moment they are in the middle and dance solo.

Village life there can be really tough though, ALSO in social terms! Still, all West-Africans I know in Europe miss the social life of their homelands. And so do I, when I come back from a trip to Guinea.

I miss the soft drinks though - not that I dislike "likton" tea.

On google earth Fissadou is put to a wrong place. What you will find looking for F. is the second New Fissadou on the other side of the Niandan river and of the RN1 (road from Koumana to Kankan). If you want to know where's Fissadou, have a look for Toroban. This village, normally placed, between F. and Gbendo (and Fadama) is put about there where F. might be, I think. In fact, F. is two kilometers more west than on google earth.

Fine village, no cars, no soft drinks, just good music!

  • Thank you so much for this fantastic video Mamady!

I love the guy with the cardboard box on his head - hilarious!

It is very good also to know the musicians names - please say a big thank you to Nansadi, Sakala, Laye, Fode and of course, you yourself!

I will now use Google Earth to try to find the village of Fissadou.

Thanks again and have a happy day you guys!
