  • When Dvorák, 24 , took up a book of Gustav Pfleger-Moravský's Moravian love poems and set them to music in July of 1865, he was entranced by an actress named Josefina Cermáková. The resulting song cycle, Cypresses is full of deep feeling, sentiment, and clearly betrays the composer's youthful exuberance in love; he revised and adapted its music many times throughout the years, most notably in the string quartet work Cypresses of 1887 and in the Love Songs, Op. 83, of 1888.
