Actually I just saw the other night on the ABC that Howard supported the East Timorese vote for independence in ten years from 1999, and the President of Indonesia even said so on the program.

The ABC has referenced the 'Howard Years' on the official website, including a copy of the letter Howard sent to Habibie in December 1998.

The letter confirms that my initial research is accurate and that John Howard was lying through his teeth during the interviews presented on the ABC.

Howard offers his support to Indonesia in maintaining autonomy over East Timor.
