@OurThoughtExactly An incident in Aus-A Sikh was asked by a clean shaven Jat there whether he too was a Jat. When the guy replied in no, he said, "too bad, had you been a Jat you would have been a real one." As for the surname Singh, the first people to use it in India on a more than seldom basis are the Manipuri Kshatriyas. Rajputs were the next and they did not originate in current geo. limits of India but in C. Asia. Even today you find men with Singh last name and women with Bai in C. Asia.

@OurThoughtExactly I am not sure how many people do not know that Sikh a pejorative form of Shishya - a tradition revived by the 10 Gurus. The first nine Gurus and for a long period of Guru Gobind Singh ji's tenure, Sikhs or disciples did not adhere to the Khalsa rule of 5 K's. Were they not Sikhs? They were in letter and spirit far ahead of today's SIkhs. Once the Khalsa reached unprecedented Glory, many people started following them. Many out of devotion, many to gain higher status in society.
