Dan Hicks & his Hot Licks 1972

Dan Hicks and the "classic" lineup of his Hot Licks - Sid Page (violin), John Girton (guitar), Jaime Leopold (bass) and Lickettes Maryann Price and Naomi Eisenberg! - performing "By Hook or by Crook" and "Shorty Falls in Love" - identified here as "Another Night". I would venture that this is perhaps a rehearsal for the Flip Wilson show of 9/28/1972 - of which there is a video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWZ8wjQE_bY - because the backdrop is the same. There is also "strange", misplaced laughter and applause, which might indicate that something else was going on at the same time.

Great original group. I saw them in 72 in a bar in Sunnyvale, CA. Nothin better than the Hot Licks on stage.

Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks. Fresh Air Tavern on Broadway, Seattle WA May 1971. I don't think I have ever seen a better show in a small venue. Dan and the band came out and hung out with the crowd at the break. Golden nights. We were 20 years old and hot for the Hot Licks!

each individual results in a perfect match of the group as a whole. I loved this group from the first moment I heard them; and their albums hold a deserved position in my collection. Such a unique sound Dan Hicks created - brilliant stuff; then, and now.

At the time--forty years ago!--I thought Dan's new sound was jazzed-up Western Swing. Today, I'm hearing Price and Eisenberg doing Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, with Price sounding about as good as Annie Ross. So I'm surprised that they didn't cover some LH&R tunes, such as Centerpiece.

Dan Hicks and his hot licks were awesome!! We started watching them in the mid seventies near the Bay Area. I saw him at a small club a couple years ago in Boise, Idaho and approached him to tell him how long I have enjoyed his music. Unfortunately, he was anything but gracious with me. He had a sense of humor back then, obviously. I will always enjoy his music and the memories they bring back, but I'm sorry I bothered Mr. Hicks or impositioned him in any way.
