In early 2006, Ma$taMind Productions released an instrumental track, "J'Ouvert Fiddla," performed by what was thought to be a group of musicians going by the name Da $pirit$. By February many a reveler chipped down the road to the tune without knowing who or what Da $pirit$ was but enjoying the music.
Soon it was revealed that Shawn "Da Ma$taMind" Noel was the man behind the sound.

"I grew up listening to a lot of older music I especially enjoyed and will always be inspired by The Mighty Spoiler, Roy Cape, Frankie Francis, Syl Dopson, Gene Lawrence Joey Lewis, and my Dad Simon Noel. So I have a lot of respect for the Pioneers of the artform. That old time sound has been and will always be something that inspires me."

"I chose the name "Da $pirit$ as a way of paying tribute to all of the musicians we've had - recognizing every one from the pan arrangers to members of the old time brass bands. I actually finished 'J'Ouvert Fiddla' quite a while before we released it. At first the plan was to have another artist put vocals on the track but my wife insisted that the music was great just the way it is and that I should leave it as an instrumental track and it grew from there," explained Noel.

So Da $pirts was born and inspired Noel to go from one instrumental to the next , After the J'Ouvert Fiddla, Noel Composed Black Cake and Sorrel a very festive instrumental that brought the Christmas feeling to people everywhere. It was fascinating when we learned that Noel had single handedly played and arranged all the instruments, and composed the melody.

"Drunk or Sober" is the latest tune from Da $Pirit$ and the Ma$taMind camp to be released for the 2007 carnival season. Much like "J'Ouvert Fiddla," this piece draws on classic calypso style.

"The song wasn't supposed to be an instrumental. I had something in mind for an artist. But Tasha [Natasha Noel, Noel's wife and business partner] suggested that we make it a $pirt$ tune," Noel said of the song's genesis.

Both "Drunk or Sober" and "J'Ouvert Fiddla," are featured on the recently released Da Ma$taMind Project 2 .

"J'Ouvert Fiddla," "Black Cake and Sorrel," "Drunk or Sober," "Ponch De Creme," and "Ham and Pastelle", could be the first of what may prove to be many tracks dedicated to the memory of great Caribbean musicians.
