Very Moving

Hes not very exciting. There is no shimmer in his vibrato. It's lazy and to the point. No mystery.

He IS playing a large viola. That's the point. He has viola tone. You must have a relatively large resonating body to get such a tone. I don't know what sort of sound you expect a viola to have - one like that of a violin? If you dislike viola tone, I suggest you do not listen to viola music. I, for one, appreciate when a player gets a good tone on their instrument without stooping to imitation of the tone of another instrument.
